Environmental Education  
Scout Merit Badge Programs
The W. Clement Stone Nature Center
offers programs to meet the merit badge
requirements for all levels of cub scouts
and webelos, as well as help with boy
scout  merit badges and eagle scout
projects.  These scout programs have
been designed by experienced scout
leaders.

Note: For some merit badges there may be
aspects of the badges that have to be completed at
home.

   Boy Scout Programs

Webelos
Choose a 2 hour program from one of  
the following badges:

Forester
Scouts will learn to identify some of the   
common native trees and forest plants of  
Kansas and learn about the structure of the
forest ecosystem.  They will learn about the
different qualities of wood and how they are
used for building. Scouts will study tree  
growth through a tree ring exercise.


Naturalist
Scouts will learn about insects and birds and    
their migrations.  They will learn about the   
different habitats in Kansas and about the   
roles of animals in the ecosystems.  Then   
they will take a hike and identify some of the     
animals and plants, including poison ivy.


Outdoorsman
Scouts will learn about fire safety, Leave No     
Trace camping, and knots in an active hike   
to the lake where they will make a sample  
meal.

Geologist
Scouts will examine a variety of rocks and  
fossils and learn about which minerals are  
valuable.   They will test for the attributes of  
minerals such as hardness.  They will learn  
how different rocks are formed and about  
the origins of fossils.  Lots of hands on  
activities.



Boy Scouts

Climbing Merit Badge
Boy scouts can meet all requirements for the climbing
badge in a 3 hour program on  the nature center's 45
ft. climbing tower. All equipment provided.

Eagle Scout Projects

There are lots of possible eagle scout   
projects available at the Stone Nature

  Cub Scout Programs

Tiger Cub Badge
In this 1 1/2 hr. program the scouts will meet  
7 requirements for their Tiger Badge.  They  
will visit the nature center, learn about an    
animal, make a bird feeder, take a hike and   
have a scavenger hunt for trash, learn   
about recycling and make a leaf rubbing.

Wolf Badge
As one of the qualifications for the Wolf   
badge, scouts will work on "Your Living  
World".  The scouts will take a scavenger  
hunt for litter, learn about recycling, discuss
different forms of pollution and ways to save
energy.  

Bear Badge
On their visit to the nature center, Bear   
Scouts will learn about an animal and how it  
lives, make a bird house, and learn about  
the role of conservation officers.  They will
be able to name an animal that has become  
extinct and why this has occurred.
